Henry keeps it all running smoothly
The heartbeat of Abounding Hope is kept alive by various individuals who give their time to the cause. Amongst one of our most important staff members at our pre-school is none other than Mzwandile Henry Mkhize, our groundsman. Born on the 13th of May in 1967, Henry is originally from the South Coast, having been born and raised in eMabheleni just outside of Hibberdene, near Mthwalume.
Now living at Masinenge since 2016, Henry began working at the school that very same year. He is the first to arrive at the school grounds, as his day begins bright and early at 7am.
“I open the gates in the morning, both the front and back gate and the ablution facilities, then my day starts.
On different days I also handle the waste management ensuring the yard remains clean all the rubbish is collected,” said a smiling Henry.
Henry’s passion for gardening is what he describes as making his job all the more delightful and enjoyable.
“I really enjoy outdoor work, and just general landscaping and maintenance. Sometimes I do find myself short on equipment such as rakes but I try do best with what is at my disposal,” Henry said.
Because the South Coast is an area commonly affected with heavy rains, the area of Masinenge and particularly the pre-school, is often affected by landslides.
“After the heavy rains there is always a build of mud and clay at the gate that causes it not to open which always causes a big issue for me. Its then up to me to ensure there is a way for everyone to come in, and for the day to proceed undisturbed,” said Henry.
Our work not only seeks to give the youth and elderly a purpose, but to provide a living for Henry and our Abounding Hope staff and volunteers. Its through generous donations that we are able to continue to bring hope into communities.
